Sexual Abuse Prevention
Sexual Abuse Prevention
Insurance Board understands sexual abuse can harm its victims, destroy trust in the church community and result in costly, destructive liability issues for the church and its ministry. Insurance Board offers tools, classes, webinars, seminars and insurance programs that proactively educate, train and enable your church community to proactively tackle sexual abuse.
What is Sexual Abuse?
Sexual abuse is unwanted sexual activity, with perpetrators using force, making threats or taking advantage of victims not able to give consent. No matter where it happens, it is a crime against its victims, who can be any age. Every church community is populated by small groups, activities, clubs, volunteer programs and ministries – all who need to be taught how to recognize sexual abuse and harassment. The perpetrator is responsible for his or her acts, but the employer or church where it takes place may also be liable. Insurance Board offers resources to prevent sexual abuse and to protect employees and congregations – webinars, training and Insurance Board’s exclusive SafeConduct™ Workbench. This proprietary, proven method of protection begins with a self-assessment that helps create a customized approach to protecting the specific needs of your church, programs, congregation and ministry.
Preventing Sexual Abuse
Sexual abuse prevention serves two great purposes. Most importantly, it keeps congregants safe. It also preserves the congregation and the church itself from suffering from the risks of liability. Insurance Board offers smart resources for preventing sexual abuse, including providing free or inexpensive background checks on church staff and volunteers. Our Loss Control Webinars include best practices for recognizing sex offenders and preventing sexual abuse in the school environment. Insurance Board also offers a 24-hour anonymous hotline to report suspicion of sexual abuse, plus Armatus Online Training that trains users how to prevent, detect and report sexual harassment and other ways to keep the church and its congregants safer. These programs include free courses that teach how to detect molesters, examination of peer pressure and sexual behavior in adolescents, keeping kids at camp safe, and how to make social media safer for users of all ages – especially youngsters.
Handling Sexual Misconduct
What is your church’s policy for handling reports of abuse and sexual misconduct? Without a policy, such difficult moments can be made more confusing – or worse. Understanding what to do with a comprehensive plan is the first step for church leadership to adopt. Insurance Board provides free resources to help you formulate a policy and response plan that includes what to do immediately, how to record information, who to call, what to say (and what not to say). While the focus of the congregation policy should be on protecting children, it is also helpful to be aware of the impact of abuse on all others affected by allegations of abuse. Open communication, awareness of threats and a firm policy will strengthen your congregation to be able to respond swiftly and with unity if and when sexual misconduct occurs.
